Francis Stephenson Hutchins (b. 1902), a native of Northfield, Massachusetts, was educated at Oberlin College (A.B., 1923) and Yale University (M.A., 1933). Having worked in China as an undergraduate, Hutchins returned to China as an instructor in 1925 as part of the Yale-in-China Association's educational mission. Franklin Parker graduated from Berea College with a B.A. in 1949. He went on to the University of Illinois, Urbana to receive his M.S. in L.S. in 1950 and received his ED.D. in 1956 from the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Parker served as a librarian at many universities early in his career and went on to teach as a professor of education at numerous others.

G. Gilbert Roberts, a 1930 graduate of Berea College, was on Berea's faculty for 46 years, retiring in 1976. Roberts was a mathematics professor and served as department chairman. He also taught astronomy, and upon retirement, the college observatory was named in his honor.
